Environmental Impact Study of the final project concerning the new Colle di Tenda tunnel

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Environmental Impact Study (EIS) regarded the construction of the new Colle di Tenda tunnel, which is located along a main road (SS20). It connects the Italian territory (in the municipality of Limone Piemonte) with the French one (in the municipality of Tenda).
The project involved the construction of a new tunnel and the boring of the existing one in order to separate the two driving directions.
The overall objective of the project was to improve the links between Italy and France enhancing the tunnel safety conditions and service levels which were clearly below standards from a technical and functional point of view.

The interventions can be summarized as follows:

  • Enlargement of the existing tunnel cross-section through boring for a length of 3.184 m;
  • Construction of a new tunnel, along the present one, with a length of 3,252 m;
  • Removal of two sharp bends just before the tunnel entrance on the French side.

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS

On the basis of the performed analyses, the environmental components affected more seriously by the potential cross-border impacts were:

  • Underground and hydrogeological aquatic environment;
  • Excavated soil and rock.

In addition to the analysis and assessment of the environmental impacts, mitigation and compensation measures were proposed. These measures ensured the preservation of the environmental components affected by the work and allowed the development of a landscape inclusion design.
