EIA Preliminary Screening for the technical-functional improvement project of Salerno Port
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In the context of Salerno Port Master Plan, Salerno Port Authority came across critical issues such as the necessity to modify the dimensions of the moorings in order to fit and accommodate larger ships which have diverse standards and greater dimensions.
These issues concerning the port layout were associated to the infrastructural limits related to the following characteristics:
- Narrow entrance to the port basin;
- Negligible depth of the seabed;
- The previous existing docks showed a modest mooring capacity for larger ships.
Therefore, the listed technical and functional interventions were deemed necessary to ensure the access to a new and larger class of ships and to avoid the regression of the functionality of the port:
- Enlargement of the port entrance;
- Extension of the overflow pier;
- Extension of the “Trapezio” pier;
- Extension of the “Manfredi” pier;
- Lowering of the seabed level.
The technical and functional adjustments described fall within the category of “non-substantial changes” and for this reason, the project is functional to the Screening Stage of the EIA procedure.
PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS
Through the environmental analysis of all the aspects involved in the implementation, the project allowed to highlight how these interventions are comprised within the technical and functional adjustments of Salerno port.
Therefore, they can be considered among the works that do not constitute substantial changes, excluding the necessity of Master Plan alterations, which would have required a complex and time consuming procedure.
