Environmental Impact Study concerning the Variation of Ancona Port Master Plan

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Port Master Plan is aimed at the renewal of Ancona port system in order to improve its transport competitiveness and, at the same time, to enhance the quality of life in the area of the city located in front of the sea.
This is achieved through the shifting of heavy transport activities from the historic port to the industrial part, the movement of the fishing fleet from the historic port, the new organization of the connected road system in less central zones of the city, away from the Mole Vanvitelliana and the associated promenade.

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS

In addition to the planning and design features, the project studies the effects and potential impacts related to the work implementation. Taking into account the planned interventions and their location, it was possible to determine the following major components affected:

  • alteration of the water currents inside the port basin;
  • consumption of water resources;
  • alterations induced on the marine and terrestrial ecosystems;
  • variation of the dynamics related to solid transport in the coastal system;
  • management of the sediments generated by the dredging activities;
  • interference with the local flora and fauna components.

Moreover, it is important to point out that dedicated measurements and surveys were carried out weekly and fortnightly to collect data regarding the noise impact and the air quality situation, respectively.
