Pre-Feasibility Study and Environmental Impact Study concerning the Development Plan of Viterbo Airport Hub
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In 2008 a planning agreement was signed between the Lazio Region and the Ministry of Transport which selected the city of Viterbo as the site of an airport open to civilian and commercial traffic. This decision acknowledged the unfitness of the regional airport system focused on the two airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino.
More importantly, it recognized the increasing difficulties to cope with the air transport demand in Ciampino Airport, mostly related with the impact on the population of the neighboring areas.
Viterbo airport development plan involves also railway and highway connections to and from the airport and, therefore, the procedures and activities concerning the implementation of these necessary infrastructures are taken into account in the planning agreement.
PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS
In addition to the Environmental Impact Study, specific characterization studies regarding atmospheric, noise and archeological environmental components were carried out.
In relation to the latter component, the archaeological degree of risk connected with the airport area was defined through the cross analysis of all the collected data and is summarized in a specific chart (Carta del Rischio Archeologico). The northern surroundings of the airport were carefully investigated because of the future construction of the archaeological-thermal park.
Regarding noise analyses, acoustic measurements were performed in the second half of the month of January 2009 for a total of 8 (3 weekly and 5 daily) sound level surveys. These surveys allowed the determination of the overall noise caused by the different sources.
