Support on key environmental issues for the feasibility study of the railway access line to the south gallery of the Gottardo Passage (Italian stretch)
Narrative Description of project: The feasibility study falls within the strategic objectives identified by both the Swiss Federal Railways and the Italian Company FS S.p.A. This study identified, for subsequent phases of design verification, the elements necessary to understand the environmental or urban “value” and/or “weight” of areas crossed. In fact, operating in a context strongly characterized by both human and natural action, it has been possible to provide each area involved with a role within the two major systems of work (man-made and natural) and, therefore, evaluate the design choices.
Specificity of the project: The study has been set according to a methodology which has led to the definition of macro-environmental systems and corridors of study within which to develop the interference analysis. The macro-environment systems refer to the river, the settlement and the territorial system. Following the detection of macro environmental analysis and corridors of analysis, spatial data according to four main themes of investigation were studied: using existing land - use planned land - restriction scheme - elements of the landscape. The survey was conducted by comparing the alternative routes to results of the study, with the ultimate aim of defining the critical environmental issues, i.e. the territorial elements caught by the project.
