Environmental Impact Study for the Project Completion of Fiumicino South for “Leonardo da Vinci” Airport

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Fiumicino South Project Completion is based on the following objectives:

• ensure a proper supply-demand relationship, in a context of environmental sustainability;
• guarantee an airport development in line with demand growth and a full utilization of available areas and designed infrastructures;
• optimize the use of airport areas and related subsystems in order to reach the maximum infrastructure flexibility.

These measures led to the definition of strategies involving the airport systems and subsystems. In order to implement these strategies, the interventions listed below are necessary:

• Dual Hub Airport Configuration;
• Completion and upgrade of the airport runways and new configuration of aprons;
• Implementation of the terminal and boarding areas;
• Construction of luggage disposal and supporting facilities;
• Parking area expansion;
• People Mover completion which is instrumental in the internal mobility reorganization.

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS

During the Environmental Impact Assessment concerning Fiumicino South project several environmental problems were carefully addressed, such as Bird Strike phenomenon, excavation land recovery and ecological interventions. Moreover it was carried out a selection of management and compensatory measures aimed at optimizing the integration between the project and the environment.
A set of analysis regarding environmental management of energy, water use and waste disposal systems completed the Environmental Impact Study.

In addition to the impact study, supplementary specialized projects were developed such as the Environmental Implication Assessment concerning Natura 2000 sites, Traffic Flow Analysis regarding the airport road network, Preliminary Archeological Assessment and Noise and Air Quality studies involving the airport surrounding areas comprising of specific investigations.

It is important to point out that, in 2007, VDP was asked by ADR (Aeroporti di Roma S.p.A.) to carry out a study concerning the then actual situation and the possible evolution (short and medium term) of the airport waste production. This study has been comprised in the EIS and takes into account methods of waste management, with reference to the quantities produced by every macro sector, identifying both growth potential and strategies focused on containment and integration of future scenarios.
