Specific Environmental Studies regarding Rome Fiumicino "Leonardo da Vinci" International Airport
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Between 2007 and 2009 ADR (Aeroporti di Roma S.p.A.) selected VDP to conduct various analyses and studies aimed at providing different services as:
• Detailed Technical Design of the necessary interventions regarding morphological system and landscape inclusion involving an embankment located within the airport at the threshold of runway 34L. Particular focus was given to the design of the embankment morphology, the planning of vegetation landscape and to the preparation of the technical-administrative documentation mandatory to obtain and carry out the work.
The main objective of these activities is to balance the requirements for mitigation and landscape inclusion expressed by the Municipality of Fiumicino with those resulting from compliance with legislation (“Carta Ostacoli”).
• Noise analysis aimed at determining the alteration to the acoustic climate generated by the aircraft traffic on runways 16R/34L as a result of runway relocation.
The first phase concerns the quantitative analysis of the alterations caused by the movement; the second regards the identification and illustration of possible physical and management measures, as well as the definition of context changes which can have an important effect on the integration of the work.
• Transport territorial study regarding the multimodal transport system serving the southwest zone of Rome, the Municipality of Fiumicino and “Leonardo da Vinci” airport.
Three stages of investigation have been developed: systematic analysis, meta-project phase and final evaluation comprising of traffic flow study and interviews.
• Reconstruction of regional and local planning framework from an ordinary, environmental and landscape point of view as well as environmental assessment concerning the definition of an integrated transport system involving the southwest zone of Rome, the Municipality of Fiumicino and “Leonardo da Vinci” airport.
PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS
With regard to the study of the acoustic environment, the estimated traffic effects were examined through INM (”Integrated Noise Model”) simulation models. The approved acoustic curves pertaining “Leonardo da Vinci” airport provided a useful reference for the noise impact assessment. In a second phase, possible noise mitigation measures were evaluated also as a function of specific flight procedures.
As part of the study regarding the definition of an integrated transport system, social and territorial assessments were conducted resulting in the identification of the stakeholders.
