Environmental Impact Study regarding the integrated road/rail transport system in the context of the HS/HC Railway Line - Third Giovi Pass project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The intervention is part of the integrated road / rail transport system upgrade for the construction of the Third Giovi Pass, located specifically in the Genoa-Milan section.
In compliance with Piedmont Region requirements, the project focuses on the utilization of the existing railway network as an alternative to the ordinary road / motorway transportation of the materials resulting from the Valico tunnel excavation activities. In particular, the route involves COP20 operating site (named Pozzo Radimero), the former Cementir area connected to the present station of Arquata Scrivia and San Bovo railway station in the municipality of Novi Ligure. From San Bovo station, the materials will be transported by road to their destination sites.

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS

The project ensures an important contribution to the reduction of pollutant emissions and atmospheric and acoustic impacts in the surrounding zones, by limiting as far as possible the road transport of materials coming from the Giovi pass excavation.

VDP carried out specific environmental analyses on the surface water system affected by the tunnel, which suggested the implementation of hydraulic works consisting in the channeling of an existing stream (Rio Campora).
At the completion of the construction activities, several restoration interventions concerning the vegetation along the ditch will be carried out in order to restore the natural environment and reinstate the role of ecological connection played by the ditch.

The plant species chosen for the vegetation rebuilding The plant species chosen for the vegetation rebuilding belongs to watercourse azonal flora and are described in the project area.
