Environmental Impact Study for the redevelopment interventions at Trapani Airport
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The interventions are aimed at solving the infrastructural deficiencies of the airport facility that is inadequate to meet users requirements in the area of the province of Trapani; the need to adapt this infrastructure to new European regulations and to ensure airport security has driven the evaluation of the planned interventions.
The existing terminal, designed in the 70s for a capacity of 100.000 passengers has not, as per today, achieved such level of traffic because of infrastructure features and deficiencies of services offered. The airport can not win the competition with the airport area of Palermo.
In this sense, the actions of upgrading and adaptation considered, respond to the need for traffic growth up to the maximum capacity of the infrastructure itself.
The project involves, specifically, renovation work at passengers area, cargo area, operational buildings and plants, as well as the enlargement of the aircrafts aprons.
PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS
The airport is located in a predominantly agricultural area where urban settlements are identified in isolated buildings, related to farming activities, and in residential areas used during summer season along the coast. In particular, the salt marshes are an element of strong local identity that characterizes, in particular, the section that goes from Trapani to Marsala. They are typical basins used for the extraction of salt and, in some cases, replaced by fish farms, constituting a system of particular biological value. They have been the object of particular attention during project development in order to safeguard the environmental protection of this landscape.
Considering this, the study of the environmental aspects related to the implementation of the project concernined an approach aimed to assume the actions planned not as impact factors on the territorial and environmental context, because they do not modify the existing framework, but as an opportunity for the exploitation of local resources.
Concerning landscape, it was identified a curtain wall system, set in order to harmonize as much as possible the existing structure and switch between opaque and transparent partitions in relation to the function of the spaces.
