Studies for the rearrangement of the NTG in the Eisack Valley for BBT connection

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project interventions arise from a functional need to ensure the safe connection and power supply enhancement of the railway line along the Brenner axis (Brenner Basis Tunnel) that the company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana S.p.A has developed as part of the Strategic Infrastructure Works for the country.

The planned works, crossing 19 municipalities, extend from north to south of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, along the Eisack Valley between Campo di Trens and Bolzano, and are mainly divided into works for the construction of new power stations, overhead power lines, underground cable power lines, modifications to existing stations, and demolition of existing overhead power lines.

The intervention of the project, is characterized by the following categories of works:

  • New realizations: overhead power lines;
  • New realizations: underground cables;
  • New electric stations (SE);
  • demolitions;

VDP conducted the following environmental studies:

  • Environmental Impact Study with Non-Technical Summary and Environmental Monitoring Plan.
  • Landscape Report
  • Environmental Impact Screening
  • Acoustic Reports
  • Preliminary Geological Report
  • Hydraulic and Hydrogeological Compatibility Verification Report.
  • Preliminary Plan For On-Site Use Of TRS Excluded From Waste Discipline.

SPECIFICITY OF THE STUDY

The design solution identified downstream of the analysis of alternatives and the participatory path undertaken since the early stages of the project, allows to connect and secure power supply for RFI safely, ensuring the best resilience of the system thanks to the integration into the 220 kV network of the existing 132 kV assets, strengthening the overall power system and following up the territorial requests/needs with a vast rationalization plan of the power lines in the Isarco Valley.

As part of the geological QA with Terna, the VDP carried out geological studies and designs with detailed geological and geomorphological surveys.
The geological study and related field activities were carried out by the VDP geologists taking into account the requirements of the Ministerial Decree 17/01/2018: “Technical Standards for Construction” which in Chapter 6, paragraph 6.12 defines the criteria of geological character to be adopted. A campaign of on-site geological surveys was then carried out, with particular reference to the most complex situations, referring to what was found in the existing literature in order to define the geological, morphological and hydrogeological context of the territory affected by the construction of the New Line and the new Stations.

In addition, with reference to what is indicated in the D.P.P. October 10, 2019 n 23, the Autonomous Province of Bolzano has identified within, the different municipal territories, areas at different levels with regard to Landslide Danger, Hydraulic Danger and Avalanche Danger (Danger Zone Plans) that have been subject to detailed geological and geomorphological surveys by the specialized technicians of the company VDP in respect of about 180 new Supports and 2 new Electricity Stations. At the end of the analyses carried out, specific design mitigation measures were identified for Opera – Landslide Hazard compatibility, Opera – Hydraulic Hazard (Torrential Floods) compatibility, Opera – Hydraulic Hazard (Debris flows) compatibility.
