Pre-feasibility and Environmental Impact Study of the âMaster Plan 2022â? of the Civil Airport of Bari-Palese

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Activities conducted for Bari Airport started with a Preliminary Study for the EIA procedure for the new airport development plan to 2020 for Bari Airport “Karol Woytila,” set as an environmental pre-feasibility.

Subsequently, the actual Environmental Impact Study of the updated Master Plan proposal was developed, with a time scenario to the year 2022.
The development of low-cost traffic and, in general, of movements at Bari Airport, resulted in the need to revise the traffic forecasts already expected for the Airport. This is one of the main reasons behind the update of the Airport Development Plan (Master Plan), which was redefined based on the time scenario to the year 2022.

SPECIFICITY OF THE STUDY

The Master Plan was prepared in accordance with the “Guidelines for the Drafting of Airport Development Plans” (ENAC), so it takes into account issues related to the general urban framework in relation to Transportation, Territorial and Sector Plans, landscape and environmental constraints, relationship with connecting infrastructure on the territory and the description of constraints.
Complementary objectives of the Master Plan 2022 are:

  • Increase the service level of airport facilities;
  • Rationalize the functional layout of the airport system;
  • Develop compatible nonaviation activities;
  • Increase the environmental performance of the airport system;
  • Strengthen the green system.

The infrastructure interventions included in the Master Plan 2022 are:

  • The expansion of the airport infrastructure, which must be adapted to air-side capacity and the expected increase in air traffic;
  • The improvement of services provided by the new passenger terminal in Bari;
  • The extension of the airport grounds to Air Force areas;
  • the extension of the Bari Airport site in order to make areas available, including for non-avion or traffic-related activities;
  • The provision of the airport with a cargo terminal.
