Naturalistic components for Environmental Impact Study of the final design of New Main Road SS291- Construction of the First Section (Alghero-Olmedo) at Rudas (SS) crossroad

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The project (Lot 1) is part of a larger intervention which includes a connection through a main road (2 + 2 lanes) between the cities of Alghero and Sassari, as well as a link road connection to Alghero Airport “Fertilia.”
The route of Lot 1 has a total extension of about 7 km and is divided into two sections: the first, of about 3.3 km, develops around the urban area of Alghero in the north - south direction and is part of the broader ring road viability of Alghero; the second has a total extension of about 3.8 km, and runs from east to west passing alongside the existing railway line Sassari-Alghero and affecting the river “Riu de Calvia”.

SPECIFICITY OF THE STUDY

As part of the Environmental Impact Assessment developed by the Client , VDP has followed the naturalistic component, in order to define sensitive locations in the area and the potential interference caused by the work.

The critical issue caused by the creation of the road consists in the removal of a number olive trees, one of the most common crop in the Area of Alghero, and the interference with the ecological connection elements which are represented by the rivers, the “Riu Calvia” and the “Rio Serra”. At the conclusion of the study, a proposal for mitigation measures has been developed, as well as suitable areas for replanting of olive trees removed have been identified.

In addition to the EIA, an Incidence Report has been developed, considering the Special Protected Zone of “Capo Caccia” near the track of the new road, in order to assess the occurrence of potential effects.

It has also been developed a Landscape Report, considering the presence in the area of landscape assets identified by the Official Landscape Plan of the Sardinia Region. To support the study, some renderings have been presented, in order to highlight the possible changes induced in the territorial context by the construction of the new road.
