Environmental Impact Study for the project of Ventotene Island port expansion

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The works involved in the project are functional to the expansion of the Port Area in order to upgrade the services provided to both pleasure boating and regular ferry lines.

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS

Considering the typology of the interventions and the context entailed, the most important environmental components were analyzed with the following methods:

  • Soil and subsoil: the study focused on the geomorphological aspects that characterize both the submerged part and the coastal zone of the port. This analysis allowed to gather significant data through surveys carried out during the design phase and bibliographical researches.
  • Water environment: for this component the study concerned wave motion examination and the definition of the internal agitation of the water system, employing physical and analytical models.
  • Biotic environment: in this case the evaluation was conducted in two different stages, one for the terrestrial environment and one for the marine one. It was possible to base the analysis on the numerous previous studies regarding Ventotene Island and its coast, allowing for a more rapid assessment.
  • Landscape: the port historical evolution was considered taking into account the alterations of the port layout occurred since Roman times. In addition, the project required VDP to develop detailed photo-simulations of the interventions.
