New Turin-Lyon railway connection. Works Supervision for the construction of the interchange niches, the internal arrangement of La Maddalena tunnel, the transport and storage of the excavated material

The works in question concern La Maddalena tunnel already built which will have the function of accessing vehicles for maintenance and rescue purposes during the operation of the Basis Tunnel of the future NLTL. The tunnel, conceived as an exploratory tunnel, has a diameter of 6.30 m and a length of ~ 7020 m; it was mostly excavated in TBM, except for the first 200m excavated with the traditional method.

In the internal layout of the tunnel is foreseen the construction of 23 niches, to allow the circulation of vehicles in the tunnel in both directions, and for the possible deposit of green rocks found during the excavation of the base tunnel. The average distance of the niches is about 400 m in order to always guarantee visibility between two successive niches. The length of each niche is approximately 30 m, increased to 35 or 52 if equipped with electrical and / or telecommunication cabins. The works also include the transport and storage of the excavated material, the maintenance of the tunnel and all the construction site areas, including the plants (purification, ventilation systems, etc.).

VDP activities consist of:

Control and approval of the construction site Environmental Management System (EMS) drawn up by the contractor, including the Environmental Management Plan (EMS), containing the planning of environmental controls to be carried out within the construction site areas and the related documentation support.
Control on the environmental management of construction sites implemented by the contractor during the execution of the work, verifying compliance with the correct implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) of the construction site and the Italian environmental legislation in force, as well as full compliance with the provisions given by the protection bodies and by TELT, to the assumptions made on the environmental aspects in the Executive Design phase and used in the authorization phase and to the conditions set out in the works contract. This check will be carried out by the Operational Environmental Manager, as the person in charge of surveillance activities on the environmental management of construction sites.
