Characterization plan of the coastal sands of interest for nourishment, and video transects to identify the top edge of the oceanic Posidonia and the presence of Cymodocea nodosa
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Province of Grosseto awarded to VDP the monitoring activities to be realized in a sea area close to the port of Marina di San Rocco and near the reef in south Follonica, in the Province of Grosseto.
The project develops along the coast between the NW boundary of the Municipality of Scarlino and the port of Marina di Grosseto, on three coastal areas.
The characterization activities consisted of sampling of water and sand that have been subjected to laboratory analysis; activities have also included the execution of video transects aimed at the localization of the upper margin of Posidonia oceanica and possible presence of Cymodocea nodosa.
The purpose of the monitoring campaign was to verify the particle size and the physical, chemical, microbiological, ecotoxicological and colorimetric features between the coastal areas interested in the relocation of coastal sands and the nourishment area.
After sampling activities ad analysis, specific technical and scientific reports have been developed on individual areas, according to D.M. 24.01.1996 and “Manual for handling of marine sediments” ICRAM APAT.
The work consisted of the following main steps, using specialized technical personnel, maritime equipment and measurement instrumentation of the highest reliability and advanced technology:
1. On field samplings, both marine and coastal
2. Biocenotic Investigations with video transects
3. Physical and chemical laboratory analysis;
4. Analysis of benthic communities;
5. Scientific and technical relations drafting.
Based on the results of the analysis on surface sediments at sampling points considered as relocation areas, it has been possible to identify for all the samples the belonging to class A1 and thus the suitability for nourishment of strand, also concerning particle size and colorimetric parameters.
